This document serves to inform St. Boniface parents how the sport of Ice Hockey is organized in St. Boniface.
St. Boniface Minor:
St. Boniface Minor Hockey Association is a group of volunteers that organize and promote the sport of hockey within St. Boniface. This is done within the rules and regulations put forth by the Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association of which SBMHA is a voting member. The foundations for these rules come from both Hockey Manitoba and Hockey Canada.
The community centers belonging to St. Boniface Minor are Archwood, Champlain, Norwood, Notre Dame, Southdale and Winakwa and are all members of the Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association.
The executive of SBMHA consists of a president, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Registrar, AA Chair, A Direct Entry (13 and up) A chair (8 to 12), House League, Referee in Chief, Timekeeper in Chief, Ice Convenor, Female Chair and has representation of each Community Centre by it’s convenors.
The association meets on average once a month during the hockey season and more frequently in late summer and early fall to take care of registrations and tryouts.

St. Boniface Minor Hockey Association would like to remind all parents that just because your son or daughter registers out of your Community Centre it does not guarantee that he / she will play out of that C.C. With ever decreasing numbers, changes to either AAA, AA, or the A system as well as the increasing popularity of High School Hockey Player amalgamations will continue and likely expand. With this in mind it is important that the Community Centres work together as well as their volunteers. We as parents must honour the policies of the Community Centre where our children will be playing.
House League teams will be formed generally within the area that the players have registered. Numbers of kids are always the deciding factors and as mentioned in the earlier paragraph parents must be prepared to have their child play out of another C.C. Community Centres will try and make sure teams are formed with fairly even caliber but at this age level it is always difficult as we try and encourage kids to play with friends, school buddies and the like.
The St. Boniface Minor Hockey Association Executive will make decisions very early on the process about team formations. These decisions are again based on numbers, previous years records, and are made for the good of the individuals, teams and program. With AA starting at 11 it is possible that total amalgamations of all community centers in the area will occur but again every age group is different and the numbers of kids enrolled are generally what drives most of these decisions. St. Boniface Minor will decide as to who is hosting a team and will decide on the numbers of players per team.
In the past few years tryouts for hockey within this category has been conducted by a team of independent evaluators using a standardized form. These are generally paid evaluators whom do not have any children playing in the division they are evaluating. No names are given only pinnie numbers and colours. Once the tryout / evaluation process is over kids will be placed accordingly with the highest evaluation ratings being assigned to the A1 team and so on so forth down to the A3 level. Coaching candidates for the A1 level will have no input in the process but may be given an opportunity to pick it’s last 3 players from a list of kids already rated given to them by the evaluators.
Reminder to parents that if a particular age group is too large for one ice time evaluations will be separated into two ice slots. As evaluations go on players may be asked to change from one group to another so that evaluations are done in a fair and equitable manner.
Tryouts will be held for teams being formed at these age levels with pre-selected coaches making their choices as to who will play on their team.
We strongly encourage all individuals whom wish to coach to apply using a form that will be provided at all registration tables. St. Boniface Minor will approve coaches for the A1 level and convenors will place coaches at all other levels.
All coaches/managers must take the appropriate clinics that are offered before mid December. Costs for these clinics are covered by Hockey Manitoba through player registration fees.
IP Program:
This excellent program is offered to all hockey players 8 and under. It contains 10 hours of ice time in which we cover the basic fundamentals of hockey. We introduce proper skating, stopping, turning and stick handling techniques. The program is designed to help the beginning hockey player to develop.
